PROJECTS

BOLIVIA

Cochabamba and Sucre

In September 2019, Project Pacer traveled to Sucre Bolivia where we partnered with Programa de Chagas and Hospital Santa Barbara for the first time. More than 100 patients were evaluated and 30 devices implanted. We were encouraged by the success of this mission and look forward to working with Hospital Santa Barbara again  post COVID 19.

Project Pacer has been very active in Bolivia, where we have worked for close to 30 years in collaboration with Viedma Hospital in the city of Cochabamba. In every trip we run a busy device clinic and perform numerous pacemaker, defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy procedures in patients with Chagas's disease. A team of invasive cardiologists also evaluate and perform valvulosplasties in patients with rheumatic heart disease.

In addition, we study and treat patients with supra-ventricular arrhythmias who undergo electrophysiologic evaluation and radio frequency ablation. There is continuous education to local physicians, cardiologists and medical students. All our trips to Cochabamba have been coordinated in conjunction with Dr. Oscar Ferrufino and the authorities of Viedma Hospital.

The team performed device implantations and arrhythmia ablations and provided education to cardiologist and fellows.

KENYA

Project Pacer missions to Kenya took place in Nairobi, invited by Dr. Harun Otieno from Aga Khan University Hospital, a well-funded, private, nonprofit, 254-bed teaching institution, located in suburban Nairobi, dedicated to satisfy the healthcare needs of the people of East Africa.

The group performed electrophysiologic studies/radiofrquency ablations of SVTs, and device implants, including cardiac resynchronization therapy. In addition, there were teaching sessions arranged for the EP lab staff and cardiology trainees.

MOROCCO

Dr. David Martin was invited by Dr. Rachida Bouhouch from the Ibn Sina University Hospital, the main third level university hospital, located in Rabat, Morocco. Dr. Martin and two other volunteers from Project Pacer performed device implants and ablations of supraventricular arrhythmias as well as provided teaching of arrhythmias to local physicians.
